PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Haitian officials were baffled this week when they discovered that a typographical error officially named Flaurent Mamothe, a six-year-old boy from Léogane, as the next prime minister.
According to lawmakers, a clerical error has resulted in Flaurent Mamothe appearing instead of Laurent Lamothe in the final ratification draft.
"We are looking into this matter," said a bewildered Senate President Simon Dieusel Desras at a press conference. "But for the time being it appears that [six-year-old Mamothe] is our newly ratified prime minister."
Desras said that the slip-up, which went unnoticed throughout the ratification process, has effectively made the young schoolboy the head of government.
"Congratulations, Mamothe," said Desras. "Until we remedy the situation, you are now in charge to lead the way."
Desras went on to tell reporters that the mix-up may have been the result of a two-month impasse that had delayed the approval of Laurent Lamothe's nomination. After weeks of putting off the decision, Desras admitted legislators may have forgotten the prime minister-designate's name.
"I suspected something wasn't right after I read the name 'Flaurent Mamothe' aloud several times," said Desras. "But since none of my colleagues said anything, I assumed it was correct."
Though upset over the mix-up, President Michel Martelly said he will work with the boy to help him set up a new broad-based government.
"I promise the Haitian people a full investigation into this matter. But in the meantime we've got a lot of work to do and we cannot let this careless oversight slow us down. That's why I'm meeting with Mamothe today to discuss a whole range of economic reforms," said Martelly. "As soon as he wakes up from his nap."
