PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Although the opposition plans to block all of his legislative agenda, Laurent Lamothe told reporters that he is nonetheless "beyond thrilled" to serve as Haiti's next prime minister.
"I cannot tell you how excited I am," Lamothe, who will not complete any of his key domestic programs due to constant parliament obstruction, told a dozen reporters who gathered to hear him speak. "If ratified, I'm eager to help my country overcome one of the most difficult periods in its history."
Sources close to the prime minister-designate have also confirmed that Lamothe's excitement has been growing by the day.
"Lamothe's been so upbeat and giddy lately," said Senior Adviser Bruno Eugène who anticipates no cooperation with opposition lawmakers. "Who knows? Maybe parliament might actually let him pass one or two key initiatives."
While members of the opposition-dominated parliament are aware of Lamothe's growing enthusiasm, they expect his excitement to taper off over the coming months.
"It's still early," said Senator Jean-Baptiste Bien-Aimé. "But soon the prime minister-designate will snap out of it."
Bien-Aimé explained that the opposition's unwillingness to compromise and preference to do what is in its best interest will make Lamothe regret he ever accepted the nomination.
"A few months from now, the prime minister-designate will be extremely frustrated by our inaction," said Bien-Aimé. "Our ability to achieve absolutely nothing is what we do best. Ask anyone."
In spite of the prospect of dealing with a highly uncooperative parliament, Lamothe's enthusiasm remains high.
"I'm so fired up," said Lamothe who will bitterly clash with parliament on a regular basis. "I just wish I could start right this second."
